Own time, own target: flexible data privacy compliance through e-learning

Data privacy training is very important because data protection is never a one-person job. In an organisation, data protection is everybody’s business – not just that of the data protection officer (DPO).

And with the growing importance of privacy certifications, including “trust mark” certifications in jurisdictions such as Singapore and the Philippines, organisations need to find ways to educate their workforce on the essentials of data protection to ensure compliance and demonstrate accountability.

Employee training can be challenging, especially when you need to train a large number of staff. Synchronous courses usually take a few days, are conducted on fixed schedules, may require in-person attendance, and can disrupt your organisation’s operations if several staff need to attend.

To mitigate this, some HR professionals are turning to self-paced e-learning for data protection training. Giving employees access to structured modules that they can view in their own available time increases flexibility while ensuring that staff receive sufficient standardised training. Such training can also be a key part of the onboarding process for new staff.

E-learning also offers the benefit of tracking employee progress. For instance, reports can be generated to see how far an employee has gone through a certain module. A digital certificate attained at the end of each course not only helps the organisation maintain an employee’s training records, but also motivates the employee to complete the course.

Questions about the DPEX Learning Centre e-Learning programme

Here are some questions we have answered in our webinars and beta testing programme:

Q: How different is the DPEX Learning Centre e-Learning programme from the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) e-learning programme?

A: PDPC’s e-learning programme focuses more on the Singapore Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) and its 11 obligations. Our e-Learning programme takes an operational perspective to data protection, with a framing that resonates with learners and makes it easier for them to relate to the modules.

Q: What modules do you offer in the DPEX Centre e-Learning programme?

A: There are two tracks. We offer a general track for staff to learn the fundamentals of data protection in certain ASEAN jurisdictions, and a DPO track is more suited for DPOs who wish to deepen their knowledge and capabilities. The general track consists of one module, while the DPO track offers up to six modules.

Q: There are plenty of materials already online and Zoom fatigue is real. What makes your e-Learning programme different and more engaging?

A: Our e-Learning programme consists of bite-sized content and has a rich bank of interactive videos that you can watch at your own leisure. You can pause them at any time and return to continue the course later. Within the access period of the module, you can also replay the content as many times as you need.

We also have a discussion board where you can engage with our expert trainers and fellow participants by posting questions and starting discussions.

Q: How much does the DPEX Learning Centre e-Learning programme cost? Is it priced per module or per user? Do you have special packages for organisations?

A: Pricing packages will be available by May 2022, when the e-Learning programme will be launched officially. Drop us an email at support@learn.dpexcentre.com to inquire about the best package for your organisation’s needs.

Q: Will certifications be provided upon completion of an e-Learning course?

A: Yes, a digital certificate of participation will be awarded to all who complete the course.
