John Ternus is not an outsider brought in to shake up Apple. He is a company veteran who joined Apple's product design team in 2001 and rose steadily through the engineering ranks. Over time, he became one of the most important figures inside the company's hardware organization, eventually serving as senior vice president of hardware engineering. In that role, he oversaw teams responsible for the iPhone, Mac, iPad, Apple Watch and AirPods, placing him at the center of nearly every major Apple device category.
