More than $325 billion has poured into AI, a sum equivalent to roughly 1.1 percent of U.S. gross domestic product. Despite that scale, only 18.9 percent of U.S. companies have adopted AI tools in any meaningful capacity. The gap between capital committed and productivity captured is not a rounding error. It is the central tension running through every major technology investment decision in America right now. The physical infrastructure underpinning AI, the server farms, networking hardware, and cooling systems that make large language models run, is consuming capital at a pace that strains conventional valuation frameworks. Roughly half of a projected $3 trillion in AI infrastructure spending will be debt-funded, which also reported that an estimated 95 percent of AI projects are currently yielding no positive returns.
