South Korea Fines TikTok US$7 million Over Unlawful Data Collection

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - South Korea's personal data protection authority said on Thursday, July 23, it had fined TikTok 10.3 billion won (US$7 million) for illegally collecting and using user behavior data from third-party services to personalize ads. As ANTARA reported, the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) stated that the fine was imposed on Singapore-based TikTok Pte. Ltd., the operator of the TikTok service in South Korea, for violating personal information protection laws. TikTok was found to collect behavioral data from 9.45 million users in South Korea through tracking devices distributed to third-party websites and apps. This data is then used to serve personalized ads. The Commission stated that TikTok did not provide adequate notice to users about the practice.
