March 2026 concluded with the arrival of two research papers within hours of each other that, together, dismantled one of the most consequential assumptions in enterprise security planning: that the quantum threat was still comfortably far away. The first came from Google Quantum AI, which disclosed that a primed cryptographically relevant quantum computer could break the 256-bit elliptic curve cryptography underpinning most of today's digital communications in under twelve minutes. The second, published the same day by researchers at Caltech and Oratomic, demonstrated that Shor's algorithm, the mathematical engine behind quantum decryption attacks, can execute at a cryptographically relevant scale with as few as 10,000 reconfigurable atomic qubits.
