When AI gives us the answers, what do we lose?

"WHAT is this news story actually about?" I asked the student standing in front of the class. The headline had been read aloud, but when I asked what the story was about and whether the news organisation had taken a particular editorial position, the student could not give me a clear answer. I turned to the next student. The same thing happened. Almost every student I called on could read out a headline but struggled to explain the news behind it. It was a political communication class. Students had been asked to select an international news organisation, read three stories from its official website, and analyse how the organisation reported political events. Before the activity began, I had specifically told them not to rely on generative artificial intelligence (AI). I wanted them to read the stories themselves and develop their own analyses.
