Testing Finds Google AI Overviews Wrong 10 Percent of Time, Millions of Errors Hourly

The pressure by Google to make artificial intelligence the focus of search results is under fresh criticism following test results that indicated that the system can generate millions of wrong answers per hour. The service is called the Google AI Overviews and consists of summaries that are generated by generative artificial intelligence models of Gemini at the top of search results. Tests of the system by researchers have revealed that it correctly answered questions nine out of ten times, leaving a large margin of error at the global search scale. On the Google side, which is handling about five trillion searches a year, that 10 percent error rate would be more than 57 million wrong answers per hour, based on the calculations used in the analysis.
