China's Foreign Ministry on Friday confirmed the arrest of Min Zin, a U.S. citizen and executive director of a Myanmar-focused policy think tank, on suspicion of espionage, a development that threatens to complicate Washington and Beijing's fragile diplomatic rapprochement. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told a regular news conference that Min Zin had been placed under criminal detention by Chinese authorities on suspicion of engaging in espionage and endangering China's national security. China has notified the U.S. consulate general in Guangzhou of the arrest, Lin added. A person with professional ties to ISP-Myanmar, who spoke on condition of anonymity citing the sensitivity of the case, told AFP that Min Zin was arrested on June 3 at Kunming airport in Yunnan province, which shares a border with Myanmar.
