Massive Data Leak Exposes Millions in El Salvador

A hacker has released personal information of around 5 millions of Salvadorans online, including full names, addresses, phone numbers, and even unwatermarked headshot photosThis data breach, believed to be the largest in the country's history, affects over 5 million people, or nearly all Salvadoran adults. The hacker claims the information was available for purchase for $250 since August but decided to release it for free after a ransom demand was not met. The data was about 144GB.This leak exposes sensitive data like social security numbers and DUI numbers, putting millions at risk of identity theft and fraud.The breach was confirmed by La Prensa Gráfica, headquartered in El Salvador. El Salvador's government, led by President Nayib Bukele, is facing criticism for the lack of data protection measures that allowed this breach to occur.
